Welcome to the Genealogy Tech Podcast (GTP) Web site!
This is the companion site to the Genealogy Tech Podcast. Here you can not only find links and tutorials mentioned on the podcast, but also additional news and articles relating to technologies that can help you along in your research.
“That’s great; but what’s a podcast?”
A podcast (sometimes referred to as a “netcast”) is basically a way to provide audio and video media programming across the Internet. There’s a wide variety of programming available ranging from shows about genealogy, to ones about wine, personal finance - the list of topics is tremendous. And best of all, a large majority of this programming is 100% free. These shows can be downloaded to your computer, laptop or portable digital music player and listened to on your schedule.
“Don’t I need an iPod to listen to podcasts?”
Absolutely not. You can easily download most shows using special software called a “podcatcher”; the most popular of which is Apple’s iTunes. Other podcatchers include iPodder, Juice, or Doppler. All of these applications, including iTunes, are free to download and use.
However, you don’t always need podcatcher software, depending on the site you may be able to listen to the show right through the Web site, or you can save the file to your computer and listen to it that way. Podcatcher software simply makes it easier to subscribe and keep up with the latest edition of your favorite programming.
How to Subscribe to the GTP in iTunes:
1. Go Apple’s site and download/install iTunes :
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
2. Open iTunes.
3. From the iTunes menu bar, select Advanced –> Subscribe to Podcast
4. In the URL box type: http://feeds.feedburner.com/gentechpodcast
That’s it!
Alternatively, you can also do a search in iTunes for “genealogy” and the GTP will be listed with many other genealogy related podcasts; simply hit the subscribe button and the latest show will be added to your audio library. You can also go back and listen to previous shows through iTunes, click the arrow button next to each show to see a drop-down list of available shows; click the “Get” button for the ones you want..
